Past Projects
Here’s a glimpse of the projects that Mortar Projects Artist Collective has organised over the years, including art festival days, creative workshops, gallery exhibitions, art markets, and paint jams. Although we are a relatively new collective, our team brings together nearly 100 years of combined experience in the arts and events sector.
You have an idea, or want to do a collaboration or want us to run a project, then just drop us a message.
Bird’s Jam: Womxn Only Paint Jams
Mortar Projects celebrated our 4th official womxn's paint jam, now called 'Bird's Jam’. We are over the moon to have had 16 artists come from all over Scotland: Dundee, Aberdeen, Elgin, Renfrew, Paisley, Glasgow & Falkirk.
Bird's Jam is created and led by @cherylgalbraith.art & @hysterious_ . We provide opportunities for women artists to get out & paint, develop skills and to showcase their talent. Through this, we are developing a supportive community of artists with the opportunity to skill-share and explore future collaborations.
These gatherings are designed to provide a safe and welcoming environment where women can come together and paint without the concerns of getting hassle for painting on the streets. This is just the start - there will be more Bird's Jams coming up in 2025 and other opportunities to follow. Plus more from Mortar Projects as a whole!
We think what we are doing is unique in Scotland, especially given the amazing support of our residence in Westway. Big thank you to them for providing our spaces. We'd love to hear from more initiatives and collectives and are very open to collaboration and partnership working!

Bird’s Jam #1 Birds Theme - January 2025
We celebrated our first official ‘Birds Jam’ of the year in association with Mortar Projects who are artists in residence at Westway Business Park in Renfrew. This particular jam is designed to provide a safe and welcoming environment where womxn can come together to our pre-organised meet & greets to collaborate without the concerns of getting hassle for painting on the streets.
There have been several women artists who have experienced abuse and threatening behaviour for painting wild in the streets, or at legal walls or who have fairly obtained paid commercial/commission work that is then vandalised by haters. We want to promote artists and spread positivity & build & lift up the confidence of local artists.
This event was private to the artists only.
Shout out to the following artists: Little Book of Transfers, JCB, Cheryl Galbraith Art, Hysterious, Cait, Useless Paint & KMcQ Artist.
A special shout out to JCB & KMcQ Artist along with Cheryl Galbraith Art & Hysterious for being the OG Pigeon crew being ladies who paint together!

Nostalgia Trip - March 2025
A few artists came together, as a few of us are taking part in a personal challenge to complete ‘one mural a month’ and our good friend JCB came up with an awesome theme ‘Nostalgia Trip’, a concept, which is about going back in time, to your best childhood/teenage memories to consider things you loved such as your TV shows, bands, WWF, rugrats, Nintendo etc.
We believe this concept will never end because there is just so many nostalgic memories that just need to be explored and painted. Have a look below of some of the creations made.
Shout out to the following artists: JCB, Cheryl Galbraith Art, Hysterious, KMcQ Artist, Evade, PSA, iKul, Seck_er & Kerry Wilson.

Halloween Jam - October 2023
A night to remember, is the creepy in the dark paint jam for Halloween, located in the Void and hosted by PSA, at Westway, Renfrew.
Its truly sad to see this site go as its being organised to be demolished, this space would serve perfectly for street art walking tours, as there is such a great line-up of artists who came along for a skoosh across these walls, cable drums, floors & shutters. There was even a zoned area with UV Glow spray paint.
If you have a space or walls, where you would like some halloween themed art, then get in touch as we are looking for location.

Summer Jam - July 2023
A summer jam located at Westway, Renfrew.
This was a fantastic opportunity to get lots of artists together, those who have never spray painted before, to those who have been painting for decades. There was such a great vibe and a variety of styles, techniques, colour and subjects painted from designed illustrations, characters to graff letters.
Credit to PSA for his video footage, more archive footage to be shared soon of the demolition of the walls/venues space.
